In addition to our website, we now have a local presence in Dade City, Florida. We are located on the first floor of Annetta's Attic Antique Mall at 14144 8th Street, Dade City, Florida 33525.

Dade City is a beautiful small Southern town with Early American Charm, so come and plan to spend the day. There are lots of beautiful shops and great restaurants for you to experience all within walking distance of one another.

She was so broken up at leaving her home in Austria that she cried all the way to France and wiped her eyes with bits of lace torn from her dress and lingerie. Anticipating future tears, she made it a point always to have a piece of lace tucked in a pocket of her dress. This say the historians, was how the handkerchief was born.

My Garden Needs More “Junk”!

Have you ever noticed as you ride through a neighborhood you will see two different houses, similar in size and shape, but one house really stands out and the other seems just okay? That’s probably because the house that stands out has more than just flowers and plants in the yard. Flowers and plants can be beautiful, but without amenities that’s all you get, flowers and plants. You need things other than plants and flowers to bring your garden and landscaping “alive”. Fences, walls, a meandering path that leads to a concrete bench with a mosaic top all tend to draw you into the garden and expand your taste and style from inside the house to the outside living space you create with your garden and patio.

Remember, the inside of your home as well as your outdoor living area are an extension of you. Repurposing discarded items, or “junk”, is a perfect and inexpensive way to add what the designers call “hardscaping” or “bones” to your garden or patio.

We have taken an old farm house door, added a couple of shelves made from parts of an old table and added two of the tables legs to create a “potting bench” for the garden or a “bakers rack” to display items on the porch or patio.

An old wrought iron ice cream chair that we found at a local estate sale makes a perfect flower stand. We cut the seat out of the chair and found a hanging basket to put inside the seat. A coconut liner goes in the basket with potting soil and the flowers of your choice. This little chair is a perfect “bone” for your garden because of the unique style and look that it brings.

Use an old wooden table and chairs you might find at a garage sale or flea market, mix in your vintage linens and china and create a romantic outdoor dining area.

Old chairs and benches, vanity stools, tea carts, especially the older wrought iron ones, have hundreds of new uses in the patio or garden.

Your imagination is the only limit to the “bones” you want to use to spruce up your garden or patio area and give it a personality of its own.

Why Do They Call It Depression Glass?

History:
You may not know this, but Depression Glass was actually first manufactured in the mid 1920’s, about four years prior to the start of the Great Depression in 1929. This type of glassware had patterns that were still being produced as late as the 1950’s. The beginning of the Depression Glass era was created by different product manufacture’s looking for a “prize”, if you will, to lure customers to shop at their stores or to buy their products off the shelf. Most people equate Depression Glass with the Quaker Oatmeal company, as they were probably the first to offer these “prizes” in their boxes of Oatmeal. The Quaker Oats company literally saved one glass company from bankruptcy by ordering enough glassware to fill several train car’s during the lean Depression years.
Although Depression Glass is probably most remembered as coming in boxes of soap powder and cereals to boost the sales of their products this glassware was also offered at movie theaters to help lure in patrons during slow periods, gas stations to encourage people to buy their gas and oil products and even some restaurants used this shiny new glassware with the fancy patterns as giveaways to create new customers and keep the loyal patrons coming back. This give away glassware for buying certain products or for patronizing certain business’s was truly a genius idea that worked to keep many company’s in business during otherwise lean times. But the bulk of the Depression Glass was actually “sold” through the numerous “Five and Dime” stores that existed at that time. These precursor’s to the Wal-Mart and Target stores of today were in abundance during this time and used the “cheap” glassware to attract customers and help boost sales as housewives patronized these discount stores for their day to day basic needs. Any pressed glass made between the early 1920’s through the mid 1940’s is considered Depression Glass.

Colors:
Depression glass was made in a variety of colors. The most popular colors were amber, blue, yellow, green and pink, although there were many pieces made in amethyst, black, cobalt, crystal, cremax, custard, delphite, iridescent, frosted and dark greens, ivory and jadeite.

Start your own collection:

Now that you know a little bit about Depression Glass, why don’t you start a collection of your own? This collection can be added to over the years and will become a family heirloom to pass on to the next generation. Depression Glass pieces also make wonderful gifts for family and friends to proudly display in their homes.

Collecting can be fun, but we warn you, it can be addicting also. Just about everyone you talk to in the Antique business started out collecting pieces for their home. ;-)

The History of Milk Glass

The origin of Milk Glass dates back to the 1700's in England. It was originally called "Opal Ware" by the glassmakers, but due to the milky white coloration of the pieces, it became known by the more popular name of "milk glass". It was meant to be an imitation of china and porcelain when it was first produced in England. The milk glass products did not become really popular until the mid 1800's when it realized a great deal of success commercially. Milk glass produced during the late 1800's - early 1900's is highly prized by collectors.

Milk glass not only comes in the well-known opaque white, but it also comes in pink, blue, yellow, caramel, green and black. The black milk glass is really a dark amethyst that when held up to the light, purple can be seen around the edges. The pink milk glass is one of the more popular colors and these pieces are some of the most highly sought after today.

The most popular pattern in milk glass is the paneled grape pattern by the Westmoreland Glass Co. Westmoreland was in business from 1889 - 1985. It is thought to be one of the most collected of the patterns in milk glass. Another popular type and most expensive of milk glass are the figurals and animals. They were originally used as packaging containers for mustard, ketchup, vinegar, and preserves. These containers were used by manufacturers as enticements for people to buy their product. They were made from the 1890's and early 1900's. Two of the most sought after and collectible manufacturers of milk glass are McKee and Flaccus. Their pieces are the oldest figural containers that were made and most were unsigned since they were considered giveaways. Other well-known manufacturers of "Milk Glass" products are Anchor Hocking, Fostoria, and Indiana Glass.
